It is always a good idea to prepare for a language trip by practising English as much as possible beforehand.  If you are in the habit of using English you will get more benefit;  if it is all very unfamiliar then you will spend the first few days getting accustomed to the language.  We offer several different types of pre-course distance learning which give very helpful systematic practice.  Our online courses can be taken from six, three or two months before the start of your course or our distance learning units can be taken nearer to the start of your course.

At a less formal level, if you are already at a reasonable level in English it may be enough to

  • listen to TV and radio in English
  • watch a DVD in English, you can also add English subtitles to help
  • read some English books, magazines or newspapers
  • or if you are at a lower level more formal instruction with a teacher at home may be very helpful.

But we do appreciate that many business people, in particular, are very busy in the days and weeks before a trip and it is hard or even impossible to find time for English at this time.  If this is the case we’d recommend that you listen to a couple of podcasts before arriving.  Even if they are just podcasts in English they will help you to start tuning the ear to the language.  Most people can find time to listen to podcasts on their daily commute or during their journey to London.  The BBC do excellent podcasts specifically for English language learners (click here) as well as general interest podcasts that are in English (click here).

The one thing that we do ask is that you take the time to complete our pre-course questionnaire; this is essential information to help us to plan your course and the short time it takes is time very well invested.
