Find out if this course is suitable for your needs
The course is suitable for university and college lecturers who are not native speakers but who increasingly need to use English as the language of instruction.
Their area of specialisation is usually a business, scientific or technical discipline, for example general business, finance, economics, law, technology or engineering, but the course is also open to participants from other fields. They are expected to already have a good command of the language but may lack confidence when lecturing in English.
The specific terminology relating to individual subject areas is not covered on the course. If you would like to know whether this course is suitable for you, please contact us.
The areas that you can expect to cover during a typical course
The course looks at some of the main features of good lectures and seminars, including language used for structuring and delivering a lecture. We begin with how to provide a clear overview of a lecture programme. The stages of a lecture are reviewed and ways of referring to visual information are examined. For these purposes, video clips of lectures are used for analysis.
We examine cross-cultural issues and different learning styles, and consider some practical techniques that can be used by lecturers to engage international students more. Where relevant, we will look at some of the problems faced by international students who come from a learning background which places most emphasis on rote learning and memorization and suggest techniques to help them adapt to an environment more based on independent learning.
The course provides substantial practice opportunities which include giving mini-lectures and leading seminars and tutorials. We focus on:
- ways of emphasising, highlighting and hedging
- eliciting techniques, dealing with questions and responding to student evaluation
- encouraging and giving feedback when interacting with students
- a focus on levels of formality in spoken English
- features which affect clarity of delivery such as stress, rhythm and intonation
