The Company

The London School of English Canterbury is part of the London School Group, which has two other centres in London (one established in 1912 and among the oldest language schools in the world) and another in Stockholm.

In Canterbury, we run two group courses as well as individual classes. Clients on the Business & Professional English course for Adults (BP 30+) range from very senior professionals, as well as VIPs, to those middle managers with growing international responsibilities. Group size is four, maximum. Clients often combine these with one-to-one tuition, where their needs can be very specific and may include, for example, English for Law, Finance, Marketing and I.T. to name a few, contextualized within their industry sector.

The other course delivered is General English for Adults (GE 30+), with a maximum group size of six. Although the themes discussed in these sessions are more wide-ranging, training is no less intensive. Our clients have high expectations and want results. We aim to exceed those expectations.  

As we are a small establishment (our maximum intake at any one time is thirty-three), great emphasis is placed upon offering a level of hospitality beyond the training room that larger schools would find difficult to match. From the welcome our clients receive each morning from the centre’s staff, and from their host families at the end of the day, to the daily monitoring of their progress and the inclusiveness of our network lunches and evening programmes, we communicate our desire to make their stay not just instructive, but memorable for all the right reasons. As a result, we receive consistently excellent client feedback.

The Role

The Assistant Courses Manager is responsible for aiding and assisting the Courses Manager, while maintaining a training role when required. The role would suit someone looking to move into ELT management, or has some experience of this and wants to further develop their skills, and potentially would welcome the opportunity to be involved in developmental projects within the London School Group.  

Main responsibilities & functions

  1. Substituting for the Academic Manager or the Centre Manager in their absence, assuming a front-of house role

  2. Management of trainers working at Canterbury, including: induction, support, CPD, classroom observation and appraisal, when required

  1. Training as needed

  1. Courses administration, as delegated, including: timetabling; client reports management; liaising with the Courses Manager, the Centre Secretary and Registrar, as well as Sales & Marketing staff regarding course enquiries, pre-course assessment and any other relevant issues; document version control

  2. Quality control, ensuring that all courses are effectively and efficiently delivered

  3. Client contact – participating in client lunches and evening activities, and generally being client-oriented throughout their stay

  4. Technical support for trainers, especially with new learning and administrative platforms;  liaising with the IT team in London on the upkeep and development of self-access facilities and the appropriate provision of IT resources

  1. Helping to ensure the smooth running of the centre, and the client services provided, by supporting other departments

  2. Development of the school's profile at external conferences/events

  3. Materials management and development; special projects as needed

Candidate Profile

Qualifications/experience (essential)

  • DELTA or relevant MA plus 4 years teaching experience

  • Working in a client focused multi-cultural environment

Qualifications/experience (desirable)

  • MA Applied Linguistics

  • A minimum of 1 year ELT Management experience

  • Training in the corporate sector

  • Project management

  • CPD management

Qualities/skills required:

  • Highly organised/very good admin skills/able to work to deadlines

  • Excellent writing and editing skills/a good eye for design, layout

  • Client focussed

  • Warm, friendly and empathetic

Qualities/skills desired

  • Comfortable/competent with School Management Platforms and Microsoft Office 365

  • Project management skills

  • Teacher training experience

  • An additional language
