Can your organisation use Erasmus+?

Erasmus+ is the EU’s funding programme for education and training, and it can cover a week studying English in London: your travel, your living costs while you are here, and most of the course fee.

The money goes to your organisation rather than to you. Your school, college, library or local authority applies to its own national agency for the grant, then sends you on the course.

Erasmus+ is neither especially hard to win nor limited to schools, but you cannot apply for it yourself. So the first thing worth establishing is whether the organisation you work for is able to apply on your behalf.

    These types of organsation qualify
Education providersSchools, colleges, universities, early years settings, adult education providers, language schools, community learning services
Cultural and community organisationsLibraries, museums, cultural centres, community and social centres, counselling services
Charities and voluntary organisationsNGOs, social enterprises, volunteering organisations, trade unions, and organisations working with disabled people, older people, or people at risk of exclusion
Public bodiesLocal, regional and combined authorities, prisons, community health organisations, coordination bodies and umbrella organisations
CompaniesBusinesses that host or train apprentices and vocational learners

Not on the list? Two routes may still be open. Your organisation can join a consortium led by an umbrella body in your country, or it can host participants from abroad.

Reasons people rule themselves out, wrongly

    "We are not a school."

You do not need to be. Libraries, museums, charities, councils and community organisations are named as eligible in the programme's own rules, alongside schools and colleges.

"We have never used Erasmus+ before."

No previous experience is required. Organisations new to the programme apply for what is called a short-term project, through the national agency in their own country.

    "We are a private company."

If your business trains apprentices or vocational learners, it qualifies. The funding covers your training staff rather than the whole workforce.

"We are too small for the paperwork."

Smaller organisations rarely do this alone, and are not expected to. Consortia exist for exactly this reason: an umbrella organisation applies and administers the grant, while members need no accreditation of their own.

"I would have to apply myself."

Your organisation applies and sends you. If someone else handles that where you work, the checker above will write the email for you to send them.

    "The UK left Erasmus+."

It did, in 2020. The UK rejoins in January 2027, and the first funded courses run from autumn 2027.

“Being able to meet people from all over the world with similar experience or age was very positive for integration and progress. All staff members were very welcoming and attentive.”
