General English 30+ combination course

Our General English 30+ combination course is ideal for mature individuals who wish to focus on their general English skills as well as their own individual language needs. The course combines a group class with individual training for a more focused and intensive programme.      

Who’s it for?

This course is ideal if you have a specific area of language that you wish to focus on or if you are preparing for something special such as an exam or public speaking event. It is also a good option if you have only a short time to study and want to make the most of your time here with an intensive course.

Course Content

Group classes are usually in the morning. In these sessions you will develop your general English language skills, focusing on listening, speaking, reading and writing as well as grammar and vocabulary. Key areas include:

  • Active speaking

  • Listening to a range of different materials

  • Practical grammar

  • Expanding vocabulary

  • Better communication strategies

  • Confident and fluent reading

  • Better writing skills

  • Discussions and role-plays

  • Pronunciation

Individual training sessions are usually in the afternoon. These sessions are tailored to your needs and can focus on any particular area of study that you wish.

Optional self-study: Before or after your classes, you can use the Self-Study Area in your centre. There are computers, a printer and plenty of desk space available. The Self-Study Areas are available whenever our centres are open. See the opening times for our centres here.

Canterbury:  25 hours/week (15 hours group + 10 hours individual): 08.45 - 15.45 (Monday to Friday)

30 hours/week (15 hours group + 15 hours individual): 08.45 - 16.45  (Monday to Friday)

London: 30 hours/week (15 hours group + 15 hours individual): 09.15 - 17.00 (Monday to Friday)


Level 1 (Beginner)

I do not speak any English.

Level 2 (Elementary)

I can say and understand a few things in English.

Level 3 (Pre-Intermediate)

I can communicate simply and understand in familiar situations but only with some difficulty.

Level 4 (Low Intermediate)

I can make simple sentences and can understand the main points of a conversation but need much more vocabulary.

Level 5 (Intermediate)

I can speak and understand reasonably well and can use basic tenses but have problems with more complex grammar and vocabulary.

Level 6 (Upper Intermediate)

I speak and understand well but still make mistakes and fail to make myself understood occasionally.

Level 7 (Pre-Advanced)

I speak and understand well but still make mistakes and fail to make myself understood occasionally.

Level 8 (Advanced)

I speak and understand very well but sometimes have problems with unfamiliar situations and vocabulary.

Level 9 (Very Advanced)

I speak and understand English completely fluently.
